*Introit Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus UMH #349

Hymn and Music by Helen H. Lemmel

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in his wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of his glory and grace.

*Hymn of Praise God the Spirit, UMH #648

Guide and Guardian1

Hymn by Carl P. Daw, Jr.; Tune: HYFRYDOL

God the Spirit, guide and guardian,

wind-sped flame and hovering dove,

Breath of life and voice of prophets,

sign of blessing, power of love:

Give to those who lead your people

fresh anointing of your grace;

Send them forth as bold apostles to your church in every place.

Christ our Savior, sovereign, shepherd,

Word made flesh, love crucified,

Teacher, healer, suffering servant,

Friend of sinners, foe of pride:

In your tending may our pastor learn and live a shepherd’s care;

Grant him courage and compassion

shown through word and deed and prayer

Great Creator, life bestower, truth beyond all thought’s recall,

Fount of wisdom, womb of mercy, giving and forgiving all:

As you know our strength and weakness,

so may those the church exalts

oversee her life steadfastly, yet not overlook her faults.

Triune God, mysterious being, undivided and diverse,

Deeper than our minds can fathom,

greater than our creeds rehearse:

Help us in our varied callings your full image to proclaim,

That our ministries uniting may give glory to your name.

Small Talk

a special message for children.

PROCLAMATION & RESPONSE

Prayer for Illumination

Guide us, O God, by your Word, and Holy Spirit, that in

your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom,

and in your will discover peace; through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

The Word in Song O Love of God Most Full Chancel Choir

The Psalter Psalm 89:1-4; 15-18, NRSV

1 I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever;

with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness

to all generations.

2 I declare that your steadfast love is established forever;

your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.

3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I

have sworn to my servant David:

4 ‘I will establish your descendants forever, and build your

throne for all generations.’ ” Selah

15 Happy are the people who know the festal shout,

who walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance;

16 they exult in your name all day long,

and extol your righteousness.

17 For you are the glory of their strength;

by your favor our horn is exalted.

18 For our shield belongs to the Lord,

our king to the Holy One of Israel.

This is the Word of God for the people of God:

Thanks be to God

THANKSGIVING & COMMUNION

Invitation to Communion

Prayer of Confession & Assurance of Forgiveness UMH #892

Our heavenly Father, who by your love has made us, and

through your love has kept us, and in your love would

make us perfect: We humbly confess that we have not

loved you with all our heart and soul and mind and

strength, and that we have not loved one another as

Christ has loved us. Your life is within our souls, but our

selfishness has hindered you. We have not lived by faith.

We have resisted your Spirit. We have neglected your in-

spirations. Forgive what we have been; help us to amend

what we are; and in your Spirit direct what we shall be;

that you may come into the full glory of your creation, in

us and in all people; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. (silent prayer)

Leader: The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. If any one

sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the

righteous; and he is the atonement for our sins, and not for

ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

Let us break bread together on our knees

Let us break bread together on our knees

When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun

O Lord, have mercy on me

Let us drink wine together on our knees...

Let us praise God together on our knees...

which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may

go into the world in the strength of your Spirit to give

ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our

Lord. Amen.

SENDING FORTH

*Hymn How Can We Name a Love UMH #399

Hymn by Brian Wren; Tune: TERRA BEATA

How can we name a Love that wakens heart and mind.

indwelling all we know or think or do or seek or find?

Within our daily world, in every human face,

Love’s echoes sound and God is found hid in the commonplace.

If we awoke to life built on a rock of care

that asked ono great reward, but firm, assured, was simply there

we can with parents’ names describe and thus adore,

Love unconfined, a Father kind, a Mother strong and sure.

When people share a task, and strength and skills unite

in projects old or new, to make or do with shared delight,

our Friend and Partner’s will is better understood,

that all should share, create, and care, and know that life is

good.

*Closing Song America the Beautiful UMH #696

Words by Katherine Lee Bates; Tune: MATERNA by Samuel A. Ward

O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain

For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!

America, America, God shed his grace on thee,

and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife,

who more than self their country loved and mercy more than life!

America, America, may God thy gold refine,

till all success be nobleness, and every gain divine.

O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years,

thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!

America, America, God mend thine every flaw,

confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law.
