U2 frontman, Bono, wrote this song in 2016 after a health scare. In an interview with the London Times, he was asked if this brush with death led him away from God. He responded, “My curiosity takes me to dangerous places, and I've been nonchalant about that. Partly because of my faith, but then I felt that faith go out of reach. It was last Christmas, and I was surprised. Belief is preposterous, but I have it, and I thought, 'I'm experiencing fear!'
It was new, and I realised I don't want to die. I want to spend more time with my kids. There are songs I want to write, stuff I can be useful for. Then, when I admitted I was afraid, my faith returned."
Questions for Reflection:
Has fear ever led you to deeper faith?
How does Bono’s story relate to the story of the withered fig tree in Luke’s gospel?
Have you ever felt dry and withered?
How are we called to model God’s patience with ourselves and in our relationships?
Lyrics:
I shouldn't be here 'cause I should be dead
I can see the lights in front of me
I believe my best days are ahead
I can see the lights in front of me
Oh Jesus if I'm still your friend
What the hell, what the hell you got for me
I gotta get out from under my bed
I can see again the lights in front of me
Hey I've been waiting to get home a long time
Hey now, do you know my name
Hey now, where I'm going
If I can't get an answer
In your eyes I see it, the lights of home, the lights of home
I was born from a screaming sound
I can see the lights in front of me
I thought my head was harder than ground
I can see the lights in front of me
One more push and I'll be born again
One more road you can't travel with a friend
Saw a statue of a gold guitar
Bright lights right in front of me
Hey now, do you know my name
Hey now, where I'm going
If I can't get an answer
In your eyes I see it, in your eyes alone, I see the lights of home
Free yourself to be yourself
If only you could you see yourself
Luke 13:6-9
6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7 So he said to the man working the vineyard, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ 8 He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, well and good, but if not, you can cut it down.’ ”

Second week of Lent fo The second pillar of Lent is fasting. Traditionally, this meant giving up food, but today, Christians fast in different ways. I encourage both children and adults to give up or take up something meaningful. This can look different for each person—like giving up TV and walking once a day, or giving up soda and adding prayer at bedtime or dinnertime. Fasting helps shift our focus toward God. During Lent, many Christians choose to give up something they enjoy to express gratitude for Jesus and to grow closer to God.Families
